Six farmers in Noman’s Lands, Kano State, are remanded by a Magistrate Court for their alleged involvement in the killing of a herder and 97 cows in Bagwai Local Government Area.

Magistrate Talatu Makama ordered their remand in a correctional facility until Wednesday for the case hearing.

The suspects named in the police First Information Report are Sani Abdullahi, Ilyasu Isa, Saleh Saidu, Isyaku Yau, Rabiu Sani, and Nata’ala Sani. Police are pursuing three additional suspects who have fled.

The incident occurred during a conflict between herders and farmers in the Sarkin ‘Ya Community, Bagwai council, northern Kano senatorial district, resulting in the death of 25-year-old Shehu Abubakar.

The police said the deceased, Mr Abubakar, was certified dead by a medical doctor at Bagwai General Hospital.

“The defendants (allegedly) blocked the cattle road, obstructing herders who were on their way to feed their animals which resulted in conflict and the killing of the herder and 97 cattle and causing 91 others to disappear to unknown locations,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor indicated that the combined value of the deceased and missing cattle amounted to N102.7 million.

Furthermore, the prosecutor clarified that the defendants’ conduct violates sections 97, 221, and 329 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State. The defendants entered pleas of not guilty to the charges.
