With the onset of the rainy season, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) has called upon farmers in the Niger Delta region, particularly in Rivers State, to prepare themselves for the recurring issue of flooding in the area. In an effort to prevent the devastating impact witnessed last year, the ministry conducted training sessions for farmers on smart agricultural practices to protect their crops against potential flooding. The training, titled "Emergency Training and Demonstration of Climate Resilient in Maize Production in the South-East, South-South, and South-West region," aimed to mitigate the effects of the previous flood disaster and prevent similar occurrences in the future. Gloria Iboroma, the Assistant Chief Agriculture Officer of FMARD's extension department, emphasized that the training was not only intended to assist flood victims but also to provide comprehensive support to farmers, boosting production and ensuring food security. The farmers affected by last year's flood expressed optimism about the training, stating that with the provision of soft loans and improved seedlings, they would be better prepared for the annual flood. One participant, Mrs. Gold Ingowari-Ekini, shared her confidence in engaging in large-scale maize farming, thanks to the empowerment received through the training. She believed that with the support and knowledge gained, farmers would achieve significant output and contribute to agricultural productivity.
